Troy—Reacting to reports of theft
spawned by the gathering of personal information from retail receipts, Rensselaer County Legislator Peter Grimm plans to file
a resolution Tuesday calling upon the New York State Legislature to adopt legislation to remove the names and other personal
information from receipts at retail businesses.
Grimm’s resolution sights occurrences of theft where lost key rings
with retail and club membership scan cards attached found there way into the wrong hands. The scan cards
used at retail stores often provide personal information such as names and phone numbers on the receipt. All
someone needs to do is scan the card and obtain enough personal information to assist them in finding the person address,
in turn, leading them to have access to the owner’s car and home.
“As we see advances
in technology and business innovations it is essential that our laws keep pace protecting consumers,” Grimm
added.
